Adam "Apex" Amarasinghe Interview

Coach G • April 15, 2020

Adam is GK1STRIKING coach and our very first sponsored athlete. We have been together before GK1 STRIKING name and logo even existed. He helped to shape, battle test and consistently evolve our ideas into reality. We could write million things, but its time to see below what Adam has to say.

Why do you Fight?

Myself and my family have always been involved in sports in one way or another and because of that I’ve always had a competitive nature. MMA is the most raw form of competition so the sport felt like a perfect match.

How and when did you start?

I started kickboxing at my uncles gym at the age of 6 or 7 and continued well into my teens. My big brother Dean then went onto fight in MMA which brought me into the game.

Who is your inspiration and why?

This is a tricky one as there has been a lot of people that have inspired me along the way but I’d say my parents are my biggest inspiration. Both coming from difficult backgrounds to give me and my brothers everything we’ve wanted and needed.

Do you fight full time or do you have to work? How hard is one or the other?

As of last year I have started fighting full time. As the level of competition in MMA has risen it makes it harder and harder to split your attention and time with other things outside of the sport. I’m also coaching my own clients and at GK1 Striking so the two go hand in hand.

Your advice to young fighters and kids wanting to do this for a living?

Personally I think this is one of the toughest sports out there so it has to be something that you not only love but eat, sleep and breath. Do this sport because you love the process…. Not the results.

How did you come across GK1Striking and what’s your experience and benefit working with coach G?

Me and Greg have been team mates for years now, we would play around with a few ideas on the pads and he slowly made the transition from team mate to coach. Over the years it’s been great to see him build his skill set and knowledge in that respect and the addition to my game has been invaluable. He’s added another dimension to my game with stance switching, changing tempos and most importantly how to apply these to MMA.

Favorite martial arts movie star growing up?

It has to be Bruce Lee right?!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Being a world champion!

Favorite female fighter?

I’ve been a fan of Zhang Weili for a little while now with some great performances on her way up but the fight with Joanna really cemented her as my favorite.

Up and coming fighter to look out for?

Keep an eye out for Cage Warriors featherweight James Hendin, big things are coming!
